Five reasons cited by BOE for Swanton teacher's suspension

Swanton BOE releases reasons for teacher's suspension, pending termination

By Expostitor Staff

Ever since the Swanton School Board met in a special session at the end of last year to approve suspension without pay and possible termination of a high school teacher's contract some students, mystified for the reason behind the action, have been coming to her support. The Expositor acquired a copy of the board's resolution on the situation, which provides an explanation for actions it took in regards to teacher Marianne Pearson.

The Dec. 29 resolution, passed by a 4-1 vote, says in part that it was "considering termination of her contract on the basis that the following actions constitute condoning of cheating, violation of FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) and other good and just cause."

Five reasons are cited:

"Despite being advised not to do so, Ms. Pearson has permitted students who are not on her roster to be in her classroom during class periods.

"Ms. Pearson has permitted students to administer and/or to grade homework, quizzes, labs and exams of other students. Ms. Pearson does not have permission to share students' work with other students.

"Ms. Pearson has permitted students to enter grades in her paper and electronic gradebook. Ms. Pearson has asked students to conceal their conduct because it could get her in trouble.

"Ms. Pearson has changed grades of students at their request for no legitimate reason and has condoned cheating by allowing students access to gradebooks where they can change their own grades or the grades of other students."

And finally, "Ms. Pearson has failed to manage her classroom appropriately."

School District Superintendent Paulette Baz said that because this is a personnel matter, she couldn't comment.
