How could request for noise abatement lead to extended hours?

The decision by Wauseon City Council to extend, by one full hour, the operating time a rental hall can make noise, has us, and others, scratching our heads and wondering "what happened?"

Neighbors in an area near Elm Street Hall requested assistance in reducing loud music and noise coming from the rental facility; noise which was clearly in violation of current city law. Curiously, the council responded by extending the allowable time for noise from 11 p.m. to Midnight.

The goals of businesses and private residents sometimes come into conflict, particularly in neighborhoods where both co-exist. It certainly seems that the neighbors' need for quiet should have been given more consideration, consideration it appears four of the six council members did not give to the issue.

We suggest council re-examine its decision; placing more weight on the needs of Elm Street and all Wauseon residents.
